“To remove theology from the church is to remove Christ from her midst.”

A powerful reflection on why theology is not just for scholars but for every believer. Learn why a church that neglects sound doctrine risks losing sight of Christ Himself.

Introduction

In our generation, many churches have become more focused on programs, performances, and personalities than on theology. Yet theology—knowing who God is and what He has revealed—is the lifeblood of the Church. A church without theology is like a body without breath, or a house without foundation. It may look alive, but without Christ, it is spiritually dead.

1️⃣ Theology Defines Who Christ Is

To know Christ is to know theology. Jesus Himself said, “This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).
Theology teaches us who Jesus is, why He came, and what He accomplished.
Without it, the name of “Jesus” becomes an empty shell filled with whatever people imagine Him to be.

2️⃣ The Church Cannot Worship Whom It Does Not Know

True worship flows from true knowledge. When theology is absent, worship becomes emotion-driven rather than truth-driven.
The Apostle Paul warns of those who have “zeal without knowledge” (Romans 10:2).
A church that ignores theology may sing about Christ passionately, yet not worship Him truthfully.

3️⃣ Sound Doctrine Guards the Church from Deception

Paul told Timothy, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching” (1 Timothy 4:16).
Theology protects the church from false teachings, emotional manipulation, and cultural compromise.
Without sound doctrine, the church becomes vulnerable to every new trend that claims to be “spiritual.”

4️⃣ Every Christian Is a Theologian

The question is not “Are you a theologian?” but “Are you a good one or a bad one?”
Every time we think about God, speak about Him, or live out our faith, we are doing theology.
The Church needs believers who study the Word deeply and live it faithfully—pastors who teach truth, and members who love it.

5️⃣ Theology Leads Us Back to Christ

All true theology points us to Jesus. He is the center of all Scripture, the heart of redemption, and the focus of our worship.
When theology is neglected, Christ is displaced. When theology is upheld, Christ is exalted.

Conclusion

A Church without theology is a Church without Christ.
To restore theology is to restore Christ to His rightful place—as Head of His Church.
Let us be churches that love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds (Matthew 22:37).
For to know Him rightly is to love Him deeply.
