1. Granville Sharp's Rule (The TSKS Construction)

The Formula: Article (T) + Substantive (S) + *Kai* (K) + Substantive (S)

The Logic: When two singular, personal, non-proper nouns (titles) are joined by the word *kai* ("and"), and the article ("the") appears only before the first noun, the Greek grammar "mathematically" links them. The first noun and the second noun are forced into an identity of the same person.

Theological Impact: Look at Titus 2:13: "tou megalou Theou kai Sōtēros hēmōn".

• God (Substantive 1)
• and (Kai)
• Savior (Substantive 2)

Because the article is not repeated before "Savior," the rule dictates that "God" and "Savior" are not two separate beings standing side-by-side, but **one single person**—Jesus Christ.

2. Colwell's Rule (Definite Predicates)

The Concept: In English, we use the word "the" to make a noun definite. In Greek, a noun can still be definite even if the article ("the") is missing, especially if it comes before the verb.

The Logic: A definite Predicate Nominative (a noun that follows a "to be" verb like *is* or *was*) often drops its article when it is moved to the front of the sentence for emphasis.

Theological Impact: In John 1:1c, the text says "Theos ēn ho Logos" (God was the Word).

• Critics often say "Theos" means "a god" because it has no article.
• Colwell's Rule corrects this: Because "Theos" precedes the verb (*ēn*), it is anarthrous (no article) to emphasize the nature and essence of the Word. It doesn't mean "a god," it means the Word possessed the very nature of God.

3. Apollonius' Canon (Genitive Harmony)

The Concept: This rule governs "Noun of Noun" phrases (the Genitive case).

The Logic: In Koine Greek, there is a "principle of harmony." If the first noun (the head noun) has an article, the second noun (the genitive) usually does too. If the first one lacks it, the second one lacks it as well.

Example: "Logos Kyriou" (Word of Lord).

• Since "Word" has no article, "Lord" drops its article to match.
• The Lesson: If you see a noun without an article in a genitive pair, don't assume it is indefinite (meaning "a"). It is likely just "matching" its partner noun to maintain grammatical balance.

4. The Sharp Exception (Plurals & Proper Names)

The Caution: Granville Sharp's rule is powerful, but it has strict "Guardrails." It **fails** if the nouns are plural or proper names.

The Logic:

• Plurals: "The (Article) Pharisees and Sadducees." Even though there is only one article, these are clearly two different groups because they are plural.
• Proper Names: "The (Article) Peter and Paul." These are two distinct people because "Peter" and "Paul" are specific names, not descriptive titles.

Why this matters: Proper study requires knowing when a rule *doesn't* apply. This prevents us from "forcing" a meaning onto the text that the original language doesn't support.
